El Monte Remembers Fallen Heroes

By Andrea Montenegro
"A great day for El Monte is what Councilwoman Emily Ishigaki called the El Monte Police Departments annual Open House celebration.
On Saturday morning the El Monte Police Department opened its doors to the community while recognizing El Monte grown Olympic silver medalist, Kim Rhode, and unveiling its new memorial to fallen officers Tony Arceo, Don Johnston, Terry Long and Deputy Jerry Ortiz.
The moming began as the city bowed its head in a prayer lead by Chaplain George Ussery followed by the pledge of allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem.
City Mayor Ernie Gutierrez and Assemblyman Mike Eng voiced their gratitude and appreciation to Olympian Kin Rhode for her skeet shooting accomplishments in Beijing, China.
"Kim got a great work ethic and talent galore," said Mayor Gutierrez of Rhode as he presented her with a certificate of recognition.
As Rhode accepted her award she recalled how neighbors drove her to the shooting range as a child. "None of (my success) would be possible if I did not have the com munity of El Monte behind me," she said. "It's because of all of you that I am here today."

The El Monte Police Department lost a colleague and friend to cancer earlier this year, but last week the staff took a step to remind everyone of strong spirit.
The workout gym at the station was named and dedicated in honor of Detective Felipe Arellano, who died in March after a short battle with cancer.
A dedication ceremony was held at the station on Sept. 11 to unveil the new name, "Gusto's Gym," and a plaque featuring a picture of Arellano, who served in the department for almost 30 years.
"Gusto" was a nickname that started with Police Chief Ken Weldon, who worked with Arellano in the Community Relations Department since its inception.
"He was like a brother to me," said Weldon during the ceremony. "I miss him like one."
Detective Brian Glick thanked everyone in attendance and sent a special thanks to Detective Gabe Santana who was instrumental in renaming of the gym.
"Phil was always a fixture in this gym," said Santana, "this was his temple."
